How To Find Your Personal Style And Stick To It

Personal Style’ is a term that gets thrown around a lot in the fashion world, it is an elusive beast at best, but what is personal style really? And what does it actually mean?

Personal style is an inside job. It’s something you create for yourself and comes from within. It’s an expression of who you are, so the genesis of true personal style is an interior journey. It is also everchanging and I know from dealing with clients on a daily basis that you all appreciate a handful of different styles.

So, I thought I’d do you a favour and nail down the steps to discovering the real you – A few tips to help you find your personal style and stick to it.

Know your body shape

The most important thing about dressing is to know your body shape and how to dress for it. If you have a good understanding of your body shape and your strengths and weaknesses, you can buy the right clothes to either accentuate or camouflage them. It’s called illusion dressing, and it works.

When working with me, this is one of the first things I will teach you.

Understand your personality

Are you an introvert or extrovert? Adventurous or sporty?

Write down some words that describe your personality. Do you think your style suits your personality?

Find your colours

As well knowing how to dress for your body shape, it’s also important to know what colours suit you.

Different colours suit different skin tones and different hair colours too.

Colours can also have a huge effect on your style and how you feel. Understand how certain colours make you feel.

Invest in some ‘forever wear’

One of the most important items in your wardrobe are items you are bound to wear forever. Such as a classic leather jacket, or a little black dress.

What particular ‘forever wear’ you choose to invest in will depend on your personal style. Once you’ve found some good quality forever pieces you will not want to stop wearing them.

Review your wardrobe

Perhaps one of the most important keys to finding and sticking to your personal style, is having an organised and efficient wardrobe, with clothes that you love and make you happy.

  • Be critical of your wardrobe. How many items have you not worn for a long time and how many were mistake purchases? Take note of why you don’t wear them, so you don’t buy items like that again.
  • Donate or swap any items that you know don’t really work for you. They may be great pieces, but if they don’t suit you or your body shape, you will not look or feel good in them.
  • We’ve all been there…You’re at a sale and see a ‘must have’ item, you try it on and it’s a bit too short or too tight and they don’t have your correct size, but you buy it anyway because you just can’t live without it and it’s cheap. Big mistake! Ill-fitting clothes will never look good on you. Create the wardrobe you love and buy clothes that you know will fit and look great!

Get yourself a ‘Style Icon’

Many clients tell me they have no idea who they stylishly aspire to. But, as soon as I ask them if they like the way Amal Clooney or Kate Middleton dress (Asher Keddie is popular too!) they automatically say “Ah yes’!!”

Make a scrap book of which styles you like and who you admire and after a while, you will see a pattern developing of the kind of styles that you like. Take note of that and remind yourself about this style before going for the latest fashionable trend.
